A corpse that travelled 17 kms along road from Nawalapitiya to Gampola .... entangled in a vehicle!
Gampola Police have recovered a dead body near a common market complex on Gampola - Kadugannawa Road which incidentally had got dragged along 17 kilometers upto Gampola from Nawalapitiya entangled in a motor vehicle.
This corpse which has so far not been identified because several parts of the body have been destroyed as the body has been dragged along the road. For that reason it has not been possible to identify the body easily, Gampola Police say.
Nawalapitiya Police have received information that there is a corpse lying on the middle of the road by the side of the railway road at Gondennawa, Nawalapitiya around 4.30 in the morning yesterday. When the police arrived on the scene at 5 in the morning, the said dead body was not to be seen.
As such, it was noticed that there was a corpse in front of the main road and blood and pieces of flesh were noticed here and there. On these findings, the OIC of Nawalapitiya Police Mr.Vijitha Kumara had arrived in Gampola. In the process, on information received that a corpse was found by the side of Gampola - Kadugannawa route, Gampola Police too launched an investigation.
Parts of the dead body which appeared to have got entangled as well as blood had been detected in areas such as Nawalapitiya, Pallegama, Ulapane, Ethgala and Jayamalapura while the vehicle concerned had instead of going along the main road of Gampola, had made a turn and then had come down on Kadugannawa route after going across the Keerapane railway track along Ambagamuwa Street and Malabar Street.
The corpse had fallen at the point where the vehicle was turned and signs have been observed that it had got dragged along the route. Subsequently the vehicle had fled after leaving the corpse there. Gampola Chief Magistrate Mr. Upul Rajakaruna arrived at the scene where the incident took place and had conducted the post-mortem. On that occasion the Magistrate had said that an inquiry into the death be conducted after the identity of the dead body is established. As such, the body had been despatched to Gampola Teaching Hospital.
It was also stated that further evidence would be called for on November 20th and preparations have been made to check the CCTV cameras on both sides of the road and two special police teams have been deployed from Nawalapitiya and Gampola Police Stations for this purpose. It was also revealed that the head region and the sexual organs of this dead body were missing.
An investigation is underway to ascertain whether this is a case of murder or a vehicle-accident and steps have been taken to trace the vehicle which had fled. Gampola Police are conducting investigations.
