Nude body of Kahawatta 31 year old woman .... in thorny thicket near river
The Ratnapura Kahawatta area which became notorious because of females being murdered has now once again come to life because a woman who went to bring clothes for the Deepawali Festival at hand was found with her clothes removed, killed and dumped into the river.
The deceased is a 31 year old mother of 2 children living in Kahawatta, Opathawatta, No. 2 Division.
When police and villagers were engaged in searching operations after the police were informed about the woman's disappearance, her corpse in a nude state was found hidden inside a thorny thicket in We Ganga yesterday (22).
The deceased is a woman by the name of Jeyarani Thilakarani. She was engaged as a labourer-woman in Opathawatta.
She had arrived home in a three-wheeler at about 6 in the evening after having been to Kahawatta Town the day-before-yesterday (21) with her younger sister to buy amenities for the house in view of the Deepawali Festival. After coming home and checking her purse, she had found that it was missing and therefore had gone in search of it thinking it had fallen on the way.
The distance to the place where the three-wheeler was parked was about 30 feet from the house and though she left the house she had not returned after that. Her sister, K. Sabina had complained to Kahawatta Police because of her sister's absence.
Kahawatta Police together with the STF made use of the services of Shana, the police dog in searching for the missing woman, Jeyarani Thilakarani from last morning and though the skirt she was wearing and her mobile phone was recovered, no trace was found of her. However,there was a pair of slippers at the spot and after Shana the police dog sniffed at it, the dog then headed to her house and subsequently had proceeded towards We Ganga side. On investigations carried out there, her naked dead body was found in a thorny thicket in We Ganga. As a result of the heavy downpour which Ratnapura experienced, the level of water in We Ganga too had risen. On a further search carried out by the police it was confirmed that the slippers belonged to her husband. Police also received information that since her husband was having an illicit affair with another woman, he and the deceased had been involved in conflicting situations between the two of them.
Deceased Jeyarani Thilakarani had a one year old daughter and a two and a half year old son too. Kahawatta Police have arrested the the suspect last evening in connection with this murder and had commenced interrogation. During the interrogation, information had been revealed that the deceased's husband was having an illicit affair with another woman.
The dead body has been sent to Ratnapura General Hospital for the post-mortem. Several injuries were noted on the head region of the deceased. Kahawatta Police are conducting further inquiries on this murder.
Police say that the series of Kotakethana female murders and this particular murder has no link.
