Minister Bandula's Super Primary School solution

Super Primaries for Bambalapitiya, Kirullapona, Madiwela
A wonderful solution launched by Bandula ....
to admit children to Colombo popular schools

Politicians are trying to find solutions to the problem of admitting children to popular schools in Colombo. The foremost reason for this problem of a lack of vacancies in classes in these schools is that because those personally-known and those who have helped the school are being given special consideration in this respect and children coming from areas in close proximity are given preference. Having kept aside most other factors in this connection, Education Minister Bandula Gunawardena had been trying to find a solution and he has now implemented the latest methodology for this.

As such, it is expected to affiliate popular schools such as Colombo Royal, Ananda, Nalanda, Vishaka, Sirimavo, Muslim Ladies and Hindu College to several schools which are now closed in areas such as Bambalapitiya, Kirullapona, Madiwela, Kalalgoda and Mattegoda and to create primary schools in affiliation under the administration of those teachers. It is also expected to admit children of government servants and children in grama seva divisions. The government hopes to allocate Rs. 100 lakhs each and as 10 classes will be opened in one school, it is hoped to admit a large crowd.

However, children joining these super schools are not admitted to Colombo schools which have come under this supervision, after class 5.

According to the plan envisaged by Minister Bandula Gunawardena, if the children pass the scholarship examination and then only they would be admitted to Colombo popular schools while children who do not secure sufficient marks at the scholarship examination would be directed to Mahindodaya Secondary schools in Colombo District from class 6 onwards thus by pasting the popular schools label to these super primary schools.

Once these schools are established, children of confidants of Politicians would find enough reputed schools. After a short period of time, there would be only children of 'pandamkaruwan' and scholarship children.

Since admission to new schools could be sought to super schools only on the basis of scholarships from class 6 onwards, it would take a fresh facelook once again on the popular competition-pressure of going for super schools and is this a solution to this issue? This then is something that should be remedied.

The cabinet approval has been obtained for the creation of this model primary schools and it is expected to build them by taking over 7 to the Central Government including 2 schools which are presently closed such as Kirigampamunuwa Vidyalaya close to the Mattegoda National Housing Complex, Madiwela Rahula Vidyalaya, Kalalgoda Maha Vidyalaya, Kirullapona Agramathya Vidyalaya, Bambalapitiya Vaishaka Vidyalaya and one Tamil and Muslim school.

It is stated in the government notification that this procedure has been adopted by Education Minister Bandula Gunawardena with the objective of finding a solution to the congestion and competition in admitting students to Year 1 in popular schools in Colombo and for the purpose of bestowing a school system for children of government servants, offering them schools of a satisfactory nature.
