Akmeemana girl's murder revealed ....
Police dog Ronnie goes to neighbouring youth's house and barks under his bed
Suspect commits suicide when on the way to show weapons
A 28 year old youth was taken into police custody from the neighbourhood yesterday for having raped and killed an 8 year old girl living in Akmeemana, Galle, due to the skill of police dog Ronnie.
The deceased Poojani Asanthi had gone to school with her elder sister and had come home day-before-yesterday (17) afternoon. Later the elder sister had gone for an extra class when the younger sister was at home. Since the mother was attached to a tea-plucker's job, it was only the deceased who had been in the house. The father who was a mason too had gone to work.
When the mother returned home around 5.15 in the evening she has noticed that the youngest daughter was missing. Though the mother has called for her by the name 'Chooty Menike' it was not possible to find her. Subsequently, the girl's mother had complained to Akmeemana Police about the daughter's disappearance about 6.30 in the evening.
It was the killer himself who had first shown the dead body of the missing girl to the people in the area; lying under a tea-shrub. He had been a lonely-dweller in a house 200 meters close to the deceased's house.
This youth had taken the girl away from her house to a scrub-jungle and had raped her; after which he had strangled her. But assuming that she was still not dead, police say that he had once more tightened her neck with a rope. It is learned that this youth is unemployed and that he suffers from distorted sexual desires.
After the police dog Ronnie identified the 28 year old youth as the culprit who committed the murder, the suspect was taken into custody yesterday (18) by Akmeemana Police. The police dog Ronnie had gone to the house where the murderer lived and after stopping near his bed, had begun to bark. As such, the suspect was arrested and he had later confessed that he killed the small girl.
The deceased is a girl named Demuni Poojani Asanthi Lankathilaka de Soysa. She had been studying in the 3rd Year at Akmeemana Kurunduwatta, Sumangala Vidyalaya.
The post-mortem of the child was conducted by JMO Dr. U.C.G. Perera of Karapitiya and it was revealed that the girl was sexually abused after which she had been strangled and killed.
When Akmeemana Police were in the process of interrogating the suspect Gamini Kumara Samaraweera (28), he had said that he wishes to show some clothes and a weapon; and while on the way had jumped into Madola. On that occasion the youth had drowned and 2 police officers who had tried to rescue him too had been accidentally suffocated with water in which case had to be admitted to hospital, police sources said.
This incident was reported last night at about 8 o'clock.
