Malabe's 'wall-doctor' responsible for death of elders next door .....
not supposed to be a doctor
If someone tries to use professional recognition to get away from misdeeds .... it is a dangerous act.
Malabe's 'wall-doctor' is a doctor who tried such a stunt and even had to forego his profession.
We recently reported of an instance where a doctor was taken into custody in connection with the deaths of an elderly couple as a result of a wall situated at a high location collapsing on them. This said house had been situated nearby.
It is understood that Dr. Nalaka Sudarshana Guneratna attached to Ridgeway Children's Hospital who is responsible for erecting the said wall is now no longer in service there and apart from that he had already been ousted from his position in the medical profession in the year 2008. This was revealed yesterday in courts.
When the case was taken up in courts yesterday, Mr. Dhammika Hemapala, Kaduwela Magistrate ordered that he be released on a personal bail of Rs. 5 lakhs. Whatever it is, it was exposed in courts that he had been dismissed from the Sri Lanka Medical Council for a corrupt act in 2008. This was notified to courts by the complainant party. He had also been barred from practice as a doctor.
However, lawyers told courts that he had tried to secure benefits of social recognition by leading both the police and the judiciary.
After the incident where there was a risk of the said wall collapsing because of the blunder committed by the doctor, though the police were notified, the latter too had backed out in questioning the doctor which factor too was pointed out with the interpretation that by appearing as a doctor he had used his assumed position in his favour.
the contractor who is supposed to have erected the wall also has surrendered to police yesterday.
