Netting for Mahanama Bridge ....
to prevent suicide
When incidents of a social nature such as committing suicide takes place, in order to prevent them, various solutions and ideas are brought forward in the form of planning out social attitudes, the environment and the settling of personal problems.
After the public came to hear about a number of cases of persons trying to commit suicide by jumping from Mahanama Bridge sometime back .... a splendid idea has now come into action to prevent suicide; which is to fix a net on either side of the bridge.
The proposal of fixing a net-covering on either side of the bridge to prevent jumping into Nilwala Ganga from there came into discussion among members of the Matara District Children's Rights Committee and a Sub Inspector of Matara Police Headquarters, Mr. Hemal Prasanna has made this proposal to the committee.
A rescue operation which is usually used to protect animals from various tragedies having had to be implemented being made in this case for human beings too is indeed a surprising phenomena.
The reason to arrive at such a decision is because most people who wish to commit suicide in Matara happens to choose Mahanama Bridge as their location for this purpose and within this year itself individuals who have committed suicide by jumping down from Mahanama Bridge comes to 5 as expressed at the meeting.
A young man from Kekanadura area, a father from Radampola area, a mother from Nakulugamuwa area have all jumped into this river within the past few weeks from the said spot and thus committed suicide and it also includes the country's sensational incident of a case of a father throwing his children into this river.
The police who point out that choosing this location as the ideal spot for committing suicide has become a fashion and it is believed that by erecting a net to prevent any room for such incidents would at least put a stop to such individuals choosing this place for this purpose.
