Schoolgirl suicides after Facebook issue -- UPDATES 8

Did Kurunegala Principal put Wenusha too ... into the Dark Room?
Further information has been collected by the Child Protection Authority who are conducting investigations into the suicide of student Wenusha Imandi while studying at Sir John Kotelawala Vidyalaya, Kurunegala that the reason for her to do so was the result of cruel reprimanding of the Principal.

The latest information is the news about a secret room in the Principal's office. The information about this 'room' was revealed on statements given by students of the school itself. It is said to be a dark room without windows and comprises of a bed with bed-spreads and it has been reported to the Child Protection Authority that students subjected to punishment are sent into this room. It was also reported that in order to find that in order to find out information regarding the said room, officers of the Child Protection Authority made an inquiry on Monday (03). It has once again been mentioned by the children to the Child Protection Authority that those to be punished were retained in this room for a number of hours saying that they were put into that room as a mode of punishment.

If it was a room constructed for the purpose of meting out punishment to the children, the Authorities have checked as to why there happens to be a bed with pillows and bed-spreads and the question arises as to whether any suspicious activities had been going on in the room. It is still not known whether student Wenusha was put into this room. The Child Protection Authority has inquired from the District Education Director about this secret room.

In the meantime, Wenusha's party has complained that during case proceedings against the Principal that the Child Protection Authority is acting in favour of the Principal. Though an allegation has been made to the effect that the accused Principal had treated the deceased student with cruelty as per the 'B' report produced in courts on 19th February, the complainant party complains that it was clearly stated as to whether further interrogations are being carried out in that respect.

They have even made a request from the Magistrate to issue orders for the Criminal Investigation Department or other trustworthy institution to handle further investigations in the future. However, the Magistrate responded saying that in a case such as this, the CID cannot be called in to mediate and thus rejected the appeal, in courts.

On the side of the Principal, it was said that the photo released across the Facebook with Wenusha appearing together with her lover is a fake photo. Accordingly, orders have been issued to the police to inquire into that matter, leading the case in a different direction.

A note of the Psychological counsellor of Sir John Kotelawala Vidyalaya was forwarded by lawyers retained by the Principal , it was mentioned that, the girl had been in a depressed condition for some time and that she had undergone psychological counselling. Further, the report revealed that the condition of depression of the deceased student who passed away on January 29th 2014 had aggravated. However, Wenusha's party said that the school had on no occasion informed Wenusha's parents about such a health condition of the girl.

Lawyers on Wenusha's side stated that Wenusha had spent her time happily with her parents and even on the day prior to her death, she had spent the day happily and that her parents had not noticed their daughter in any ailing condition as such.

Expressing further, lawyers from the complainant party went on to say that the Principal after having been granted bail by the courts on February 19th had been engaged in a celebration hosted at the school grounds with the school musical band in attendance and was even garlanded. It was said that by these acts of influence which was created on the students who came forward to give their testimony as witnesses it was questioned as to whether a question arises whether a person released on bail could resort to such an act.

Lawyers who spoke on behalf of the Principal then said that the said celebration was not organized with the knowledge of the Principal and that since he was given a transfer to the Kurunegala division office, the very next day he was bailed out; therefore no influence had been made on any witnesses.

Court hearings to resume on April 2nd.
