Achala who lost her left hand for exchanging rings .....
however enters into marriage on March 6th .... winning her battle!
News of Achala Priyadarshani, student of the Law Faculty who lost her arm because of the negligence of Matara General Hospital in January last year created a shock all over the country.
However, the government took steps to help her after this tragedy of losing her arm by providing her with the opportunity of travelling to Germany to get an artificial hand. When all this took place, Achala's fiance stood by her like a rock, unmoved. He happens to be an army soldier and is Pradeep Kumara by name.
There marriage had been planned a long time ago to be conducted when Achala's Law exam was over; but whatever it is, they did not look back in changing their decision because of this unfortunate incident.
As such, Achala and Pradeep took each other's hand in marriage last Thursday (Mar 6). It was Achala's left arm that was subjected to this accident. After this incident she had begun to get accustomed to writing with her right hand as she was a left-hander. It was under such conditions that she even faced her Law exam. Achala who braved all her challenges, managed to get through her exam with a Second Class and this is what she has to say:
"These days I am having my vacation. I got a Second Class Pass and after taking my oaths, I'll be practising at Embilipitiya courts as a novice. I can now write with my right hand. It's a bit difficult to use the artificial hand which I got from Germany .... that's because my body began to put on weight somewhat. I am thinking of what to do about it".
At the auspicious time of 10.16 in the morning on the 6th Achala took Pradeep's hand but she was minus her left hand to exchange the wedding ring, according to tradition.
We all should value and appreciate both Achala who succeeded this far amidst challenges because of her grit .... and also her fiance Pradeep who never thought of leaving his fiancee in her moment of sorrow either.
