It was reported from from Athinimale, Ehetuwawa area of a sorrowful incident where a mother elephant who strived to save her young calf who had fallen into a well in the night had in the end met with death, draped with tears and maternal love..
The mother elephant who was about 20 years old with a height of about 7 feet had fallen on the body of the young calf who was about 3 and a half years of age and as a result of the pressure and crush that resulted has tragically died inside the well which was approximately 28 feet deep and which did not contain even a drop of water, Galgamuwa Wild Life Guardian told the media.
Police had taken steps to bury both the mother and its calf within the same fatal well with the aid of baco machines.
There is no other sentiment to equal a mother's affection in the whole world. It is not only common to human beings but to beasts as well. The mother elephant who fell into the well at Athinimale in Ehetuwawa also would have felt that same maternal love.
Is it not the meaning of this motherly love that this mother elephant who met with this unfortunate death expressed having attempted to save the baby calf in a world where mothers who throw their babies into the garbage bin as soon as they are born?
