Engaging in physical exercises during hernia ....?
Why did Lahiru die during Leadership Training?
Lahiru Sandaruwan Jayaratna, a student selected to the University of Jaffna passed away yesterday (Feb 1) during the University Leadership programme.
A few days prior to this he was admitted to Peradeniya hospital as a result of having fallen sick during a Leadership programme on the 26th of January and though subjected to an operation, it proved unsuccessful and finally succumbed to his illness on Saturday (Feb 1).
This ailing condition had started during the time he was following a Training programme at the Gannoruwa Army Training Camp when indulging in physical training.
According to medical opinion, his death had been caused by the hernia condition which had influenced his diaphragm and which in turn had pressurized the lungs and ultimately resulted in inactivation of the heart. It was also reported that this student had for sometime been suffering from a hernia condition.
He had been admitted to Peradeniya hospital after being found sick and later transferred to the intensive care unit as his condition had aggravated.
An operation had been performed on him on January 26th and he had passed away while still in the ICU. It is understood that he had died around 12.45 last morning.
Lahiru Sandaruwan Jayaratna a resident of Kudawewa, Ambagahawewa, Nochchiyagama was afforded the opportunity of entering the university after having sat for his Advanced Level in the Commerce stream.
The Army has issued a notice that a student had died while undergoing a University Leadership programme as a consequence of a long-term state of sickness, expressing their opinion in this respect.
Student Nishani Madhushani of Welimada passed away in Badulla General Hospital during such a training process last year while A.S. Wickramasinghe (52), a school Principal too passed away last year while undergoing training at Rantembe Camp when engaged in assembling a parade, after suffering from a chest pain.
The Inter-university Student Council has issued a notice about the incident saying that this is another occasion where yet another student has died as a result of a sickness that occured during compulsory army training given to university students by the government.
What Mr. Mahinda Jayasingha of Lanka Guru Seva Sangamaya Secretary says is that university students should be made to undergo a medical test before being made to engage in physical activity such as this.
