Student killed by turf roller at Ananda School ground

Student's death not because he was pinned down by roller ....
but by handle pressing on chest

It was earlier reported this morning (Jan 21) that a student of Ananda College, Year 4 class died from a sudden accident as a result of being pinned down by a turf-roller when standing near a wall of the grounds. But according to news received by Gossip Lanka by a father of the deceased child's classmate, the incident is as follows. What he says is that the turf-roller was not
moved towards the child who was standing near the wall; but that the handle of the roller which was made of iron had turned in the opposite direction and fallen towards the boy.

The father of the student who supplied this news further says that as a result of a sharp end of the handle of the roller had gone through his  chest, it has caused a fatal injury to him in this manner. It was reported that the child was immediately rushed to Lady Ridgeway hospital in Borella and that he was bleeding profusely; however he had succumbed because of excessive bleeding.

Grade 4 student of Ananda meet with death ... from accident at grounds


Early this morning, a student of grade 4 of Ananda College, Colombo met with an unfortunate accident which happened within the school premises. He had been at the College grounds to practise for  the sports
met and had been standing near a wall of the School playground when a group of College-mates had been pushing a turf-roller, which culminated in snatching away the life of the student.

The accident was reported at about 7.30 this morning (Jan 21). A clique of students had been trying to push a roller which is used to level the turf in the playground and though they had noticed the boy standing near the wall, they had been unable to control the movement of the roller.

On this occasion the boy concerned had been pinned between the wall and the roller. Later, a group of students of a higher class in School had proceeded to rescue the victim with difficulty and had taken him to the saukhyadana unit to give him first aid. However, even by that time the child had breathed his last, it is reported. It was also understood that the roller was not of a technical-type.

The deceased student was Sinetha Wijeysingha, an 8 year old student resident in Kaduwela. Police investigations are underway in this connection.
