Buddha calendar raided at meat boutique

An owner of a boutique selling meat and eggs in Moneragala town has been arrested by the Moneragala police yesterday (Jan 6) for having created a calendar for the year 2014 with the picture of Lord Buddha and that of the Dalada Maligawa.

Pictures of the Buddha and Dalada Maligawa had been printed on the said calendar and at the bottom of the calendar an advertisement of chicken, pork and eggs for wholesale and retail is mentioned.

The owner of the shop who distributed these calendars was taken into custody by the Moneragala police and expected to be produced before the Moneragala Magistrate. It is learnt that while the owner of the shop is a Buddhist, his wife belongs to a different faith.

Investigations in this connection are being conducted by Nalin Wasantha, Sub-inspector, Sarath, Sergeant (28645) and Samantha, Police constable (57971) under the supervision of B.M.M. Dissanayaka, OIC of Moneragala police on instructions of Lionel Goonetilleke, Superintendent of Police for Moneragala and Anura Pushpakumara, Assistant Superintendent of Police.
