Colombo University Boys' Hostel issue

125 'Big brothers' who had a fine time in the hostel in Colombo campus ....gets caught

Though it is the usual custom for campus hosteliers to vacate the hostel after their academic period, this is not to be seen in most boys' hostels in universities in Sri Lanka.

When  securing jobs, after they happen to complete their studies at the university, most of them resort to the habit of try to come back to the same hostel where they were and lodge there  with their younger university counterparts in order to save expenses on payment of rent elsewhere. The not-so-strict wardens are to be found in boys' hostels unlike that of girls' hostels, there is no one who has come forward to question about this issue.

However, this situation has come to light because of CHOGM and is reported from Kithyagara Boys' Hostel.

Vice Chancellor Mr. Kumara Hirimburegama had said that the university administration has taken steps to remove over 125 external individuals who were found lodging there by force.

University students have been granted one week's holiday on behalf of the CHOGM. However, he confirmed that on an investigation conducted as to why some students have not moved out of the hostel, it was found that they had stayed back at the hostel.

Though the administration had removed them, it was reported that they have crept back to the hostel when it was reopened day before yesterday (17).

The university administration had once again taken steps to send them away from the hostel yesterday (18); but the students have launched a protest on that occasion against this action taken against them.

It was reported that among these external individuals had been those who had left the campus after their studies, those who were employed as well as undergraduates of other universities.

What Professor Kumara Hirimburegama, Vice Chancellor of the University of Colombo said in relation to this incident was that these persons had been putting up at the hostel for some years. He also said that such persons remaining in the hostel would turn out to be a threat to the security of the present students who are there and for that reason the hostel facilities of the students too have become minimised. Therefore he stated that a legal decision would be taken to eject these outsiders from the hostel and they are supposed to be in the region of something between 125 -130 who remain there by force.
