Toppled TV set causes death of child

by TV set falling on body


    A case of a child of 3 years and 4 months who most tragically met with death as a result of a television set falling on the body, being pressed by it and receiving cut injuries by glass is reported from Akkarawaththa area in Galgamuwa.

   Though the child's mother and grandmother had been in the house when the tragedy occurred, they had been unable to notice what the child was doing in the hall of the house.

   When this incident happened, the child's mother had been in the kitchen breast-feeding her other child who was a few months old, seated on a chair in the kitchen chatting to her mother who was engaged in cooking. In the process though the child of 3 years and 4 months who was with them at that time had walked towards the hall all fa sudden and his mother and grandmother had not taken any notice.

   After a short while there had been a big noise coming from the direction of the hall and when the child's grandmother had rushed to the hall, all what she could see was that the TV set in the hall which was set on an iron stand had toppled from its position with the child underneath it.

   Even by that time the child was bleeding with wounds on the body and yelling and they had taken steps to admit him to Nanneriya hospital immediately. But by the time he was admitted to hospital, the child had passed away.

   It was revealed at the investigations that the current wire connected to the TV was kept on the stand made of iron which had got entangled with a part of the body, making the TV topple.

   The deceased child Pramod Akalanka  was aged 3 years and 4 months. Pramod's father was serving at the Navy when this incident had taken place. The mother and the grandmother of the child are still in a state of shock. Police are conducting further inquiries.
