The DP had received almost 46000 votes. Thus, they have secured 3 seats in NW with 2 seats to MC and 1 seat to JVP.
It was ITAK that won all votes as well as postal votes on a seat-level in the North at this election. Leaders who represented the Tamil people instead of turning towards war had symbolically displayed their decision for democracy by casting a percentage of 67.52 votes and for a number of decades a voting system of such a nature had not been seen in the history of the North.
Though democratic rights were withdrawn from Sarath Fonseka, he had given his support for this election on behalf of the DP and had made public speeches resulting in coming to the forefront as a power securing 3 seats from NW and 2 seats from Central Province. Thus the DP was able to collect 46114 votes from NW and 45239 from Central Province. In the North they were able to get only 170 votes.
It is a point of interest to note that the JVP was able to secure only 1 seat at this election. They secured 19624 votes in NW, thus resulting in winning 1 seat. They received 13887 votes in the Central Province and it was as a summary about 1.17 percent of the entire election results, but failed to secure a seat. In the North they were able to get only 288 votes.
While results of the preferential votes are still being received, though Dayasiri Jayasekera has got an outstanding win from the battle with Johnston's son Johan, it is reported that official results have still not been announced. Unofficial results say that Dayasiri has received over 3 lakhs preferential votes while Johan has received one and a half lakhs votes; thus becoming second on that list.
Panduwasnuwara which was the seat of Dayasiri when he was with the UNP and also where he functioned as the organiser of that party was won over by uPFA this time with almost 40000 votes while UNP lost about 4000 votes and thus receiving one-tenths is considered a special victory.
