The husband had been working in the Batticaloa area while his wife and the 2 children were at home and he usually had come home once a week. He has had a suspicion about a person who had been visiting his wife during his absence and for sometime a conflict had been going on over this issue. Last morning too an argument had flared up between the two of them and the argument had reached a peak and at about 11 that morning the husband had got hold of the coconut-scraper in the house, with which he had suddenly without warning dealt a blow on his wife according to the statement recorded by the police from the 2 children who had been in the house at that moment. The son had been studying at an international school and was 10 years old while the daughter was 7 years old.
The children had said that their father and mother had been fighting incessantly throughout the past and that their father had constantly accused he mother about an 'uncle' as mentioned them to the police. The husband of the deceased Nilanthi was holding an administrative post in a popular garment firm. He was attached to the network of that government factory as the manager and had been drawing a handsome salary and though he was assigned a job which required him to travel a long distance away from home, he had managed to adjust himself to the call and had stationed himself in Batticaloa, making it a habit to come home once a week or once a fortnight. He had given instructions to his wife to remain at hoe and look after the children and had not sent her to work anywhere.
However, she had made use of this freedom given to her and the news reached the ears of the husband through a friend of his that his wife was on the sly inviting another male to the house from time to time. However on being questioned, she had denied such an incident continuously. In the meantime, the husband had received strong evidence to confirm the illicit connection about a week ago. He had once again lost his nerve and it was after that that he had taken steps to murder her by using the coconut-scraper.
The husband of the deceased had been taken into custody by the police on suspicion. The Homagama police are conducting further inquiries into this matter.
