HOTTEST WEATHER HITS THE ISLAND

All activities gone haywire because of excessive heat

     Because of the immense heat experienced all over the country these days, normal activities of people have become disorganised. This situation has caused problems in engaging in daytime activities as well as when going to sleep in the night. The Weather Dept. authorities say that the temperature of 36.1 C. reported from Polonnaruwa yesterday was the highest recorded temperature in the island for this year.

    When taken in comparison, other areas too recorded a high temperature. Ratmalana 33.2, Mahailupperuma 35.7, Kurunegala 34.4, Ratnapura 34.3, Moneragala 34.9, Jaffna 33.9 and Potuvil 34.0 recorded such high values.

    It has been reported that as a result of the heat, young men of Polonnaruwa had immersed themselves in tanks and spent their daytime while some others had been bathing in wells continuously. There were also those who spent their time around fans to spend the daytime. However, those selling king coconuts and those trading in soft drinks remark that it has been a boost for their business. Authorities of the Weather Dept. have said that the high temperature would last for another fortnight.
