SAHELI GAMAGE SPEAKS

Some people have made fake stories combining me and the President
-Saheli Gamage Speaks

From the song ‘Ayubowewa Maha Rajanani’ song during the past numerous stories were built involving her. She had even left the country.
When she returned to the country many newspapers published interviews she had with them disclose the old stories. She had mentioned and disclosed about stories that were spoken about me and the relationships with the President. These were made purely to sling mud at her.
It is learnt that she had gone to USA after obtaining the ’green card’. Her father had spent a sum of Rs 42 lakhs to educate her at the Malabe private medical College. But it had of no avail as her medical degree is not recognised here. Hence that degree she had forgotten now.
A name of a lane in Maharagama was made in her name owing to a request made by the people and even now she can go and meet and come after meeting the President she had disclosed ta in interview she had given to the ‘Mawbima’ newspaper is appended below.
Saheli ,is true that many say that you are person who goes ‘boutique’ to the government?
‘No I do not think and agree to it’.

However you became popular by signing such a song.
“Of course among my songs this song became enormously popular. But in the year 2008 after studying music I had released my own CD. It is after that I sang the ‘Ayubowewa’ song. All accuse me for that as I sang a eulogy song. If anybody challenges I say to hear about 70 songs that I had sung previously under different themes. But this song was attracted to many owing to it sensitiveness of the song and sung at a time when Sri Lanka had triumphed in the prolonged war. There was no politics involved in this song. It was sung for the people in this country. For this song I was awarded the 2010- SLIM-NIELSON PEOPLE’S AWARD.
I won 78% peoples preferences. I received so many votes. The critics had emphasised that this was a record breaking receipt of people’s votes.”

What did you expect after singing this song?
“By singing this song I got  a deep feeling that I did justice to my country I consider it as a great honour. I also consider it a privileged to have got the opportunity to sing when people were celebrating the war victory.”

Do you believe that the Sri Lanka has now achieved the objectives that were in people’s minds?
“Yes I see a big improvement, particularly in the development activities. Peoples fear is not there. They live without any fear. For development people have got strengthened. Fear of dying had vanished.”

Do you think this song got popular as it contained political lyrics?
“ At that moment the lyrics were very appropriate. Yes it may have been it went into their hearts at time they had been suffering.”

Is it the general public or that of the heartbeat of the President Mahinda Rajapaksa?
“No it is not like that. It was he led from the front in the winning process. He motivated the forces and made the war to be won.”

Then calling Maha Rajanani was not for him?
“No. But he was instrumental in drawing plans as the President coordinating all activities in defeating the fierce enemy. His name was not mentioned, but only his position. Even in the visual his name not mentioned. His figure was only shown”.

You have now sung this song about the leader. Haven’t you have an idea of singing a song for the suffering masses?
“Why not. Even now I have sung songs under different themes. I have sung a song of a family with lyrics where the father is Jaffna Tamil, mother is a Sinhalese having a daughter where she is subjected to suffering in Colombo as well as in Jaffna. For singing that song I won a Sumathi Award.”

When you were studying abroad our Rizana who went to Saudi Arabia as a housemaid was executed for the offence for a murder. When you hear it how did you feel about it?
”I was deeply grieved and was shocked. I always prayed for her release. For her she had to face a great injustice. On behalf of Rizana and our mothers I have composed a song for the mother’s day. Young girl’s like Rizana should not be sent abroad. I was also born on mother’s day.”

Sri Lanka is a democratic country. But after your ‘Maharajananai’ song there were speculations that our country is going to become under a Dictatorship era.?
“It was the kings who ruled our country in the ancient times. That was something that came to my mind when I sang the song, not anything else.”

Is it true that after singing this song you had got a lot of presents like lands, vehicles, houses and many other privileges?
“That is not all. I also got bad names a young girl should not get by a group of people. I got subjected to a lot of unnecessary criticisms for things I had not done” .

What are they?
“Some had made fake stories about me and the President”.

Who had made these stories?
“I do not know. There are 80 % who like this song while 20% do not like it. It may be that 20% who sling mud at me. In some websites they have drawn unwanted photos and had thrown mud at me. I first entered the Malabe, SAITM. As it was not recognised I had to go abroad. While at SAITM my father had to unnecessarily spend a sum of Rs 42 lakhs. Some made stories that I got free education at SAITM.

Saheli, how did you face and react to these situations?
“If anyone is not guilty one should not feel guilty and be afraid. Some had called my relatives and related various stories. I do not feel sorry but my mother and father suffer for them.

What are the links you have with the President’s family?
“There are no close links. We have not sought help at all. But we could speak to the President anytime.”

After this song did your relationship with the President get enhanced?
“It never happened. We speak. We have met at meetings held after winning the war.”

Are Namal and Yoshitha the friends you associate?
“There are no close relationships”

Do you go to ‘Temple Trees’ often?
“Not always only if there is a necessity”

Is it true that Temple Trees is banned for you?
“There is no such thing. I could always go there. I could also meet Shiranthi Madam at any time”

When a road was named after you was there a problem?
‘There wasn’t any problem. There was no name for our road. But in the media it was published that there had been a problem. When I attended a function at the Kotte Ananda Sastralaya. I met M/s Nimal Lanthra and Isuru Devapriya. They asked me Saheli what you want. I told I do not require anything. My mother told along our road there is a school, Chandrathana Manawasinhe Vidyalaya. The road is in a bad condition. Children fall and get wounded as there are pot holes. Sometimes three wheelers had also overturned as the road is not smooth. If this road is repaired it would be great favour. For this request the road was made. For it they give the blessings to us. The road was named not at our request, but for the request of our people along the lane.”

Is it true that in that matter the President intervened?
“Until the road was built the President was unaware. He did say that he will help us. Out of my 70 songs only one song is heard. Even in Government radio channels my songs are not heard. If one things that I get help from the President would such things happen?”

Saheli, is this your attempt to enter politics?
“No not at all. I do not like politics. Even singing I do not like to make it a profession. From my small says my ambition was to become a doctor and serve the country.”

Because of your problems they say you had to leave the country. Is there any truth in it?
‘If I left the country for a certain reason I will not come again. We have green cards to America and Canada with PR. But still I will not leave my country.”

If strong politicians bring  you marriage proposals?
“For marriage it is difficult to find a good person. It is the same with any politicians”

In the event if the Government falls will there be a problem to you?
“I cannot say. But if there are people whom I think are against me something may happen”

Have you had got to face political problems?
“No, not at all”

To date how many times you’ve got the chance to cast your vote?
“Only once after the war. I cast my first vote to the President”
