Although Rizana could not be released by paying of ‘Diya’ compensation 17 Indians who were sentenced to death by the ‘Sharia’ law freed.
It was not possible for Sri Lanka to pay money and save Rizana Nafeek from been executed. However it is reported from the United Arabic Emirates that 17 Indians who were sentenced to death were freed by payment of ‘diya’ according to ‘Sharia’ law which is also called blood compensation which was paid by an Indian businessman.
These 17 convicted persons were sentenced to death having killed a Pakistani National while they were employed there. This incident had occurred in the year 2009 when all of them had been consuming liquor has had an argument and killed the Pakistan National Misri Ban. In the month of March in the year 2010 when the case was taken up 17 Indians were proved guilty of this murder and according to the ‘Sharia’ law was sentenced to death.
After payment of a sum of one million US$ to the family of the Pakistan national killed as the ‘diya’ payment also known as blood compensation the 17 accused were all released and freed. This decision was made by a court in Sharjah.
After they returned to India one released person 28 year old Kuldeep Singh said that he was very happy to come back home after a period of over 5 years.
The ‘diya’ compensation was paid by an Indian National businessman in Dubai named S.P.Singh Babarai. In the case of Rizana, the President had sent two appeals to the King of the Kingdom Saudi Arabia through our Ambassador in Saudi Arabia. These letters were sent to offer pardon to Rizama Rafeek who was on a death row. It is also learnt the relatives of Rizana had even offered to pay the ‘diya’ compensation for the release of Rizana.
However the bad luck Rizana had was not the same for the 17 Indians.
