A beggar woman having watched the incident has given evidence:
It is reported that a Police constable owing to frustration and desperation due to a breakage in his love affair in sheer anger had chopped his ex girl friend, a woman police constable with a ‘manna’ knife killing her on the spot. She had been cut at a number of places in her body as well. He had immediately taken poison from a bottle he had carried in his pocket in order to commit suicide.
The deceased is a woman police constable, Nadeeshani Madhubashini Samarasinghe. The police constable is 30 years old Pushpakumara had not died after swallowing poison. He had been admitted to hospital for treatment. It is
The deceased Nadeeshani is a member of the Police cricket team. She had been on her way to the Police grounds for cricket practices, the time she leaves was known to constable Pushpakumara. She is attached to police communication section and had been a member of the police cricket team for about three months. As she has to attend practices she had been living in women’s police quarters in Fort.
Constable Pushpakumara had been attached to the Moneragala police station. There love affair had prolonged for a period of about one year. They had first come to know each other when Nadeeshani had spoken over an official matter to Pushpakumara over the phone. Constable Pushpakumara had been speaking to her constantly and it had led into a love affair.
The two in the recent months have had a number of conflicts. Nadeeshani had decided to stop the love affair. However Pushpakumara had sternly objected to it. It had ended when Nadeeshani had told Pushpakumara that she will never talk to him again. Police constable Pushpakumara was perturbed, very angry and disturbed over her decision.
On the 3rd of January he had obtained leave from the Head Quarters Inspector saying his mother was sick and his leave was granted. Constable Pushpakumara had then proceeded to Colombo to take revenge from Nadeeshani. This was revealed though police investigations .Pushpakumara knew that Nadeeshani takes the route over the pedestrian overhead bridge near the Tele- com headquarters. He had come near the bridge with a sharp ‘manna’ knife and had waited for her at 6.30 a.m the time she crosses it.
Police constable was waiting to have a dialogue with her. When they met they have had a very heated argument. Constable Pushpakumara through sheer anger and desperation had pulled out his ‘manna’ knife and had clubbed her neck ruthlessly and injured many parts of her body as well. She had died instantaneously .At the same time he had taken out a small bottle containing poison from his pocket and swallowed the poison. For the screams of the deceased Nadeeshani the police personnel in the vicinity had arrived at the scene. The constable Pushpakumara who was not dead had been admitted to the Colombo’s National Hospital.
A beggar woman who had been on the bridge had been watching what really happened had given evidence. The police are conducting investigations.
