Athlete Ranga Wimalawansa was caught through CCTV video cameras for robbing a Chinese woman for Rs 40 lacks which she has won at a night club ‘casino’.
Champion short distance sprinter Ranga Wimalawansa and his colleague, a Police Constable have been arrested by the Kollupitiya Police for robbing a Chinese woman a sum of Rs 40 lacks which she had won at Casino in a night club.
One the first of November a Chinese woman had won Rs 40 lacks at a casino night club.
She had carried the money she had won in a travelling bag and had been chauffer driven, Ranga Wimalawansa and his colleague a Police constable had followed her car in his luxury vehicle and had managed to halt her car on Alloy Road in Kollupitiya. He had fired several shots from a pistol to the air and had frightened her and grabbed her travelling bad which had contained the Rs 40 lacks cash and had vanished.
On the previous day Ranga and his colleague had gone to casino night club and had been watching this Chinese woman closely with interest which was revealed via the CCTV video cameras. This was a clue to suspect him. He been a sprint champion he was a familiar face to the observers in the CCTV videos.
The suspect Ranga Wimalawansa is a regular person who patronise the casino night club. Hence identifying him was not at all an issue. Ranga as short distant ace sprinter had won several medals for Sri Lanka at the South Asian and Asian games. He had dreamt to rob this money as he had lost a lot of money at this particular casino.
He had made a confession that he had given Rs 12 lacks to his friend the Police constable and he had kept Rs 28 lacks for him. He had spent for two actresses and hotel charges a sum of Rs 125,000/ and had spent a lesser sum to take his wife and children on a pilgrimage to Kataragama with the money. His friend has portrayed as an amateur a major role in a film due to be released shortly.
It is learnt that Ranga Wimalawansa had been arrested and remanded by the Police a few months ago for misappropriation of funds and misleading persons to the tune of Rs 16 lacks saying that he could obtain Visas for them to travel to USA.
