“We don’t want any caste”
Sri Lankan society is based on caste and from any person’s full name could reveal their caste as the surname is originates from the caste. Even though caste was a standard used to measure people in the old society that is not valid anymore.
Yet, last week at the Engineering Technical Institute, an issue had been created based on caste. The chief guest of the occasion had been Dullas Alahapperuma. In the awarding ceremony, the announcer had read the full name of a candidate. Then, the minister, Dullas Alahapperuma, had made a request not to use surnames which denoted their caste as it is not necessary. After that the organizer who had gone to the announcer had made a request not to read out the surnames. Thus, afterwards only the initials had been read out, without the full names.
