MAHELA JAYAWARDENA SPEAKS

The pressure of their middle order batsmen could not be borne by us. This is what happened to us
-MAHELA SPEAKS

In the T 20 final we had to be the runners-up. There was a press conference held by the media to question Mahela as to what really went wrong. When were on top a vital catch was dropped by one of our fielders .It was then they started accumulating runs at a brisk rate to get on top of the game. This was the cause for our defeat. They scored 20- 30 runs more.
While explaining the reasons for our defeat Mahela had this to say........
“I thought up to the 12th over we played really well. At that moment one of our fielder’s dropped a very vital catch. We could not come out of trouble after that. That was the reason for our stunning defeat.
After Ajantha Mendis sent a very good over in which he captured two vital wickets. Then we came back to the game. The accumulation of 20 to 30 runs after his over was our down fall. If we were able to restrict the West Indies to a total of around 100 to 120 runs we could have challenged their total. I cannot tell just one reason for our loss.
We thought we performed very well through the tournament. Despite that we failed miserably in the Final. Just like the starts we made in the earlier matches we could not repeat it in the final.
When there was pressure we could not cope and face it. Our middle order failed miserably. Because of our mistakes we failed miserably in the finals. Questions were raised as to why Malinga was given to bowl continuously. That was because Samuels the hero could not face him properly in the Pallekele match.
We did come to the finals with that confidence. We started the match with a good temperament. As I said before we could not cope with the pressure aimed at us. We could not cope up with the scoring rate as our middle order batsmen failed. We gave away 20-30 runs in excess to them.
West Indies despite a slow beginning scored 90 runs in the last eight overs. That boosted their confidence. We did our best, but failed in our run chase miserably. We did our best; the bowlers too did their best. Our most batsmen failed to maintain the same type of momentum and they did not perform to their true potential.
As a whole the West Indies performed better than us.”
