A story of a group of friends who have cut their friend’s body into seven pieces and burnt it in order to hide the murder was reported from Kadawatha, Biyanwila. It was Janaka Manjula, a 30 years old youth who had been working at a duty free shop at Katunayake Air Port. On the 9th of last week, people have witnessed a body cut into pieces which had been burnt at Biyanwila Tea Estate Road. The Police had identified the dead body to be Janaka Manjula’s.
Afterwards Ragama Police station had started investigations. His family has told the police that he has left the house on the 7th of this month to watch the T/20 final cricket match at Galle Face. The body has been found two days later.
The Police took a report of the recent calls and he had made through his mobile and the areas in which signal had worked and found out that he hadn’t gone to Galle Face. If so where had he been?
Mobile signals showed that he has been in Kiribathgoda. It had been found that he has had friends at Kiribathgoda but those hadn’t been good ones. The Police suspected that he would have fought with them. The police started inquires from one of his friends as the Police have received a tip that he had been drinking with them. He had told the Police that it was true that Janaka was at his place drinking since they have had a drinking party but that Janaka went home after the party.
However the Police who have suspected him as he had been anxious during the inquiry and therefore he had been questioned endlessly and finally he had confessed about the murder. He had told that works in one of his cousin’s restaurants and that he resides in the second floor of the flats situated next to his workplace. Drinking has been a habit for them and Janaka has been spending on behalf of them most of the time as he had been the richest of the gang.
On the day of the murder, Janaka and another friend has got together for a drink and the suspect had asked for money. But Janaka had not paid much attention to him. Afterwards he had thought of stealing Janaka’s gold chain to solve his financial crisis.
The suspect had told his plan to the other friend and they have made him drink a lot. When he had been totally under the influence of alcohol, they have taken his gold chain and when they have checked his purse, they have found out that he has not had much money in his purse. Then they have forced Janaka to withdraw money from his credit cards. Janaka had shouted at them saying: “I do not want to give money to you bustards, I will go to Police for stealing my money.”
His friends had got mad at this and had hit him hard as they have been really drunk. In between the friends who had been in the restaurant fearing that stealing will get caught, had run to the kitchen and carried the knife they have used to cut meat and hit him on Janaka’s hips. They have hit him at a stretch and they have left the place leaving the pieces at the restaurant. The next day, fearing that they will get caught, had cut the dead body into pieces and taken them in a Urea bag.
They have spend till it gets dark to buy three knives and they have cut the dead body into seven pieces. Afterwards, they have rented a car from a “Rent a Car” place and put the bags into the dickey of the car. Then they have driven up to Tea Estate Road, at Soysa Road and unload the bags to a corner. Then they have poured petrol and burnt the body parts. This has been around 1 ‘O’ clock and the villagers have got to know this on the following day. Since the body was identified to be Janaka’s, the Police was successful in tracking the murderers.
The suspect who had been working at the restaurant was arrested and it was found out that he had been an underworld thug. It was also reported that they have been caught several times for using illegal drugs and for other anti social activities, but since they have had the security of a well known politician of the area, they have always got ridden of their accusations.
Police is carrying out further investigations on this regard.
