The first ever Para Olympic medal in the annals of our history won by Sri Lankan Pradeep Sanjaya:
He says all expenses were borne by him without a single sponsor:
Today early morning at the London Para Olympics 2012 history a Sri Lankan has won a medal, a bronze medal in the men’s metres 400 T-46 event. He is Pradeep Sanjaya.
He had completed the distance in a timing of 49.28 seconds. The gold medal was won by an Austrian with a timing of 48.26 seconds, while the silver medal was won by a Brazilian with a timing of 49.21 seconds.
No other competitor had even come close to winning a medal for Sri Lanka in the Para Olympics 2012 games. The last hope was Pradeep Sanjaya who achieved it for Sri Lanka by winning a bronze medal.
In the Para Olympic Games he had also participated in the Long Jump, 200m and 400m events in the class of participants without one hand or paralysed hand in which Pradeep Sanjaya was placed 5th in the 400 m event.
In an interview to the BBC world service, Pradeep Sanjaya had disclosed that if he was given more training and assistance he would have performed better.” I had to purchase all my requisites like shoes, clothes etc. at my own expense. For my training purposes no one came forward as a sponsor to help me. If a genuine sponsor came I was confident of performing much better.”
Pradeep Sanjaya who won a bronze medal in the Para Olympics 2012 had won a gold medal in the Asian Para Olympics in the year 2010.Yet he could not find a sponsor. He had been totally neglected despite his talents and achievements.
