Cricket fans that were prevented entry into the Sooriyawewa stadium had clashed with Police. Six fans arrested:
Yesterday the ICC world T 20/20 cricket match was curtailed owing to heavy downpours .As a result the game was restricted to just a seven over clash. The game was between hosts Sri Lanka and South Africa. The match was played at the Mahinda Rajapaksa International cricket stadium in Sooriyawewa in the Hambantota district.
The ground in spite of the rain was filled to capacity by a crowd of 35,000 fans. Despite the rain had curtailed play for a long time the fans from Hambantota had tried to enter the stadium when it was already filled to capacity. Those fans had tried to enter the stadium by force and clashing with the Police. Even the Special Task Force personnel deployed were finding it difficult to control the fans.
The angry fans had hurled stones and other objects in protest and even had tried to be funny with lady spectators. Some vehicles that were parked had been damaged. The Police were successful in arresting six offenders and arresting them for their very unruly behaviour. All those arrested were fans from in and around Hambantota.
Owing to heavy downpours the 20/20 game was restricted only to a seven over affair. The South Africa very convincingly beat Sri Lanka by 32 runs when they were asked to bat first after Sri Lanka Skipper Mahela Jayawardena had won the toss. This result did not matter to Sri Lanka and South Africa both had qualified for the Super eights round.
At a huge International event like this the Sri Lankan fans should know to behave much better. They should know that the clashes of this nature are known to the world through reports via Reuters.
