The manner of catching the thieves suddenly at Piliyandala, was it a drama?
The theft that took place at the museum in the month of March was a disgrace to our culture, more than the value of the Archaeological items. This is the view of the majority of Sri Lankans.
It was very unfortunate that the Police were unable to any clues about the suspects who robbed the valued articles from the Museum. It was believed that this has had political patronage and hence for the Police it was just another incident of a robbery.
After a lapse of a number of months all of a suddenly thieves had emerged and were caught travelling in a three wheeler in Piliiyandala. This incident had arisen, further suspicion among the people about the theft. Are those caught the real culprits or is it something that happens in a drama.
About this doubt and suspicion only one responsible had boldly spoken. That was the leading Buddhist monk, Ven. Omalpe Sobitha thera. In this regard he had aired his views to the ‘Diviana’ paper. While the Police media spokesman, had given his views to the ‘Dinamina newspaper.
They are appended below:
“The President’s personal attention needs to be drawn. This is a fabricated story. .
Dr Omalpe Sobitha thera quips.
The Police had purposely taken in some drug addicts as suspects. It had been done to deceive the people and the story itself is astonishing. How could drug addicts enter the national museum which is located in a high security Zone?.How could an insane person in the calibre of a drug addict commit such a complex robbery? He had confessed that drug addicts could never have succeeded in committing the robbery. At the time of the Lalith Athulathmudali assassination a dead person who had carried a national identity card was named as a suspect. He had gone to say that such a vital institution having huge amounts of archaeological values should have been given more security. Ultimately the blame had been placed on a packet of drugs. Not protecting such a valuable place should be regarded as a calamity for our National heritage. He had finally drawn the President’s intervention to find the lost articles which cannot be valued.”
The statement of Omalpe Sobitha Thera is loathed by me- Police media Spokesman:
The statement made by Ven Omalpe Sobitha thera in regard to the arrest of suspects in connection with the robbery at the national museum to the media is totally condemned by me. He had placed the total blame on the Police personnel. This was disclosed by the Senior Superintendent of Police Ajith Rohana to the ‘Dinamina’ newspaper.
He had quipped that what a Buddhist monk knows about how Police is used to detect robberies. He had gone on to say that for the biggest terrorist attack made on the World Trade Centre in America even the detectives over there took nearly 10 years to get at the suspects. Then he also told about the assassination Rajive Gandhi , where it took nearly eight years to arrest the suspects. He said it is disgraceful to attack the police. This is what the Police media spokesman had to tell the ‘Dinamina’ newspaper.
