HAMBANTOTA PORT BEGINS ITS OPERATIONS

The first ship with vehicles have landed Hambantota Port

The first business operation at Hambantota port was launched today after one and half years time after which was opened in November 2010. For the first time at Hambantota Port, a ship full of 15 vehicles landed today and the vehicles were disembarked. A Japanese ship called N4K Frizzier ship has landed today and another ship called Ellison Sun from Chennai is to be expected soon with other thousands of vehicles.
Due to delay and traffic in Colombo city, the government had stopped embarking vehicles from the Colombo Port and therefore, they have taken steps to embark vehicles at Hambantota Port.
The vehicles brought by the Japanese ship are expected to be sold in Sri Lanka. But the vehicles that are to be brought by the Asian Sun will be re-exported on the 15th of next month to Algeria.
Ministry of Ports and Aviation have pointed out that they have to pay the ships for the delay caused by the traffic in the Colombo Port and therefore, they have decided that Hambantota Port will be an alternative Port and that it will be very much beneficial for the government.
