The doctor who has prescribed the drugs has disappeared
An unfortunate incident of a 19 year old youth falling into the Rajangana tank after getting intoxicated by taking the drug ‘Tremadol’ which was given to him by a doctor was reported the last week. ‘Tremadol Hydrochloride’ is a pain killer given to the cancer and severely disabled people is banned to be sold for healthy people in Sri Lanka. A doctor called Mullegama has been prescribing and selling these tablets to the youth in Rajanganaya.
It is also said that the youth in Rajanganaya have been addicted to this drug since it is cheaper than illegal drugs. It was reported that some have got epilepsy as side effects . Aravinda, the youth who died too had experienced fits in many occasions.
Aravinda Thusitha Perera who is said to have taken 37 tablets had fallen dead on the bank of the Rajanagana tank.
Aravinda’s mother, sister and grandmother had been aware of him taking these drugs and there had been those tablets in his purse all the time. When his family had gone to see the doctor to ask him not to give those tablets to Aravinda, the doctor had always closed the door for them.
After the death of Aravinda, the doctor had disappeared. It was reported that he has left the town. In between it is also reported that this doctor who had been working in Mahiyangana some time ago had been chased from there as the adults of the village have caught him selling these tablets to the youth.
The day before yesterday the villagers have protested in front of ‘Parakrama’ Hospital asking to find this doctor and to take necessary actions against him.
