SUICIDE TREND MUST STOP

Can’t we stop the rate of suicide?

The latest statistics reveal that about 120 people attempt suicide in Sri Lanka daily and the death rate is about 12 per day. According to 2011 statistics of the World Health Organization, Sri Lanka has been placed in the 11th position with regard to suicides.
The death of the 19 year old Wasantha Pradeep Bandara due to a break up in his love affair who was a resident of Eppawala is only a single case among many.
When a person commits suicide, the lives all the relatives, friends and colleagues undergo a lot of stress and trauma. It can be a cause for ruination of his family too. Another problem the family had to face is the social disgrace. According to the records of the World Health Organization, the suicide rate has gone up in 60% over the last 50 years. This increased rate is more prominent in Developing countries. Out of all the suicides in the world, 60% are recorded from Asia.
According to the WHO, if there is proper National policy a progress in the prevention of suicides can be expected.
The relevant officials should take necessary actions to stop incidents like what happened at Eppawala.
