Devi Balika Maha Vidyalaya No 1,
When results of G.C.E. (Ordinary Level)/ (Advanced Level) results are released it is the current practice to discuss about the number of 9 “A”s obtained by the students in various schools and the highest marks that were obtained for separate subjects by students of schools scattered Island wide. Most of the Principals in schools are delighted when the names of their schools are published in such instances in the media and TV channels.
In complete contrast the experiment unit of the Department of Examination had revealed that the standards of education in schools cannot be measured by the results that are released. To gauge the standard of teaching a new formula has been formulated. This was revealed by the Minister of education Bandula Gunawardena.
Accordingly schools who have obtained 70% marks are considered as schools which provide a good standard of education. According to the G.C.E.(ordinary level) results released there are 56 schools where standards of education are high. Out of these schools 43 are categorised under schools under the Central Government termed as ‘popular’ national schools.12 schools come under the purview of the Provincial Council administration. The survey had revealed that 30% schools have lesser facilities for students, while 42 schools need to be provided with better facilities and upgraded.
According to the results released it has been found that several ‘popular’ national schools with a lot of facilities have been beaten by lesser known schools in the outstation.
