BEST SCHOOL LIST DEPENDS ONLY ON THE AVERAGE MARKS OF O/Ls

Some famous schools in the island were not enlisted on the best schools list because the list was made based on the average marks of the O/Ls.

Schools with many applicants would anyway go down the list.

The Minister of Education has made a list of the best schools depending on the grades the candidates who sat for the G.C.E O/L examination.
Devi Balika was the top in the list and Rathnavali Balika Maha vidyalaya and Matale Science College became second and third respectively. There have many criticisms due to that many schools have been dropped down from his list,
Many questioned why it had dropped out many famous schools and schools that are said to be best schools in the island. Some questioned as to why the schools which are good at sports and extracurricular activities are not included in the list.
Research Center of Department of Examination shows that these problems have arose due to shortcomings of the data. This list is made out of depending on the average grades the students have scored for every subject in O/Ls. Some schools have come on the list depending on the number of applicants who have sat from one school. For an example, the number of applicants from Devi Balika  Maha Vidyalaya for mathematics has been 84 and it had been only 77 from Royal College. The number of candidates for O/Ls from Devi Balika had been 233 and it had been 684 from the Royal College. In order to come on top of the list, the average marks should be higher and all the students should score high marks. If the number of students is more, there should be a less number of weak students.
When we look at the list, the average marks of Devi Balika for religion have been 78 and the average marks of Ratnavali Balika Maha Vidyalaya had been 83. The average marks for Science in Devi Balika had been 83 and it had been 84 at Matale Science College.
This list had been made depending only on the average marks for each subject on O/Ls and extracurricular activities or sports skills have not been taken into consideration when making the list of best schools. These 56 schools are the schools which has had the average marks above 70.
This list doesn’t include the schools which have had the average marks of 69 and there hasn’t been a category to show the schools which has the average marks of 70-30. Matara Rahula, S. Thomas’ at Mount Lavinia and Richmond in Galle are not in the list as their average marks are below 70. At the same time the schools which were enlisted as weak schools as their average marks were below 30 have been enlisted on the second list.
