BANDULA’S STORY OF RUPEES 7500/-

Today to eat and drink well for a family of three,Rupees 7500/- is more than sufficient:

At a ceremony held at Homagama,the Minister of Education Bandula Gunawardena made a statement that for a family of 3 a sum of Rupees 7500/- is more than sufficient to eat and drink for one calendar month. The statement he made is as follows:

“Today our people are used to spending lavishly. The number of mobile phones in the country if counted is more than that of the entire population. People have got used to eating from hotels where food is expensive. If they get used to live a simple life, the unnecessary expenses could be brought down. When I was small the salary of a government servant was only Rs 80/-This amount was sufficient to eat and drink.
The expenses needed to feed a child in a hostel for all three meals is only Rupees 2500/-Hence for all three meals it comes only a sum of Rupees 7500/-.In this context for a family of three a sum of Rupees 7500/- for a month is more than sufficient to eat and drink. It is because of unnecessary expenses people grumble about the cost of living.”
