VEGETABLES IS THE QUESTION

The ultimate result would be the hike in the prices of vegetables owing to scarcity and loses to Traders:

Because of the order given to transport vegetables and fruits in plastic containers, yesterday and today the normal distribution of vegetables and fruits has been hindered almost completely and the consumers are heading for the shortages is imminent. The loss caused to traders would be enormous.
Today morning the workers in the Manning market had made a dreadful protest. The road around had been congested with traffic. The distribution of vegetables and fruits has been interrupted severely. The supply of vegetables and fruits to hotels curtailed and is more or less at a standstill.
Owing to this protest at Tambuttegama, Dambulla, Norachchanai Economic Trade Centres trade dealings have become to a standstill and severe financial loses to trades.
As a result in Colombo and suburbs the prices of vegetables and fruits have sky rocketed particularly in Super markets and Pola’s greatly inconveniencing the consumers owing to high prices and the scarcity of food items.
As plastic containers were not used yesterday 40 Lorries and today 3 Lorries were apprehended by the Police at several places island wide. As the Minister remains firm in his stand it appears that this conflict is not going to be resolved easily and would be proved more grave and would get further extended.
In order to prevent wastage and to have the vegetables and fruits in good stead, this is the 4th occasion Minister of Consumer Affairs Johnston Fernando, this request had been told to be implemented. Like on earlier occasions the traders too have admitted that this suggestion is a good ploy, but the cost of plastic containers and the quantities that could be transported are the only barriers which the traders cannot afford to bear and they have to face many other constraints.
The Minister is adamant about this proposal and is requesting the traders to get adapted to this practice. The conflict between the Minister and the traders is dragging on. The end result would be the increase in the cost of prices of vegetables and fruits. The consumer would have to face the consequences as well as the traders who would be deprived of their daily income for their livelihood.
