The absolute root cause of Karandeniya Doctor’s Murder revealed via the aid of tape recorded cell phone telephone discussions
It is reported reliably that just like finding in many other murder cases where the murderers were brought to book, tape recorded cell phone discussions of the suspects helped to find the accused and how it was all manipulated.
After Doctor was shot dead near his dispensary Police investigations revealed many clues in their initial investigations itself. It was initially investigated that one person who had a grudge with him was a person who owned a flower shop. As Doctor was still a bachelor it was known to many in the area that has had an affair with the wife of the flower shop owner. The neighbours had told over this there had been some conflicts. The husband of this lady was supposed to be a thug like person. The Police had made investigations in this regard but it was proved incorrect in suspecting him. There was initially some suspicion about him.
Then the Police diverted their attention toward others who were Doctor’s enemies. Although many Medical Practitioners were jealous about the slain Doctor’s lucrative practice two others who were running dispensaries with Medical Laboratories had real grudges with him as because of slain Doctor’s practice was blossoming their earnings were dwindling.
The owner of the Medical Laboratory by name Chinthaka was one. Once he had hurled stones at Doctor’s dispensary. In another instance he had sprayed Doctor’s car with a mixture containing cement and water. In another instance he had kept a flower wreath in front of Doctor’s dispensary.
Chinthaka was employed as a laboratory technician in the Polwatta Hospital. His mother’s medical test reports were condemned by the Doctor and also had refused to accept them and also what the patients brought reports from his laboratory as they were in accurate and substandard. About these there had been constant arguments, retaliations and verbal clashes.
In the context of the above the Police had a massive suspicion about Chinthaka. They started questioning him for some time. He had quipped although he had made some minor hindrances to the Doctor; he never had any idea of killing him. As his answers were very feeble and made in fear the Police suspected him and went on questioning him.
The Police wanted to investigate his bank statement. On the day before the Doctor was killed he had withdrawn Rs 400,000/- from his bank account. When questioned for what purpose the money was withdrawn he was unable to give a substantial answer. Chinthaka was suspected to be the main suspect when the outgoing telephone calls taken from his cell phone were checked. The Police investigations revealed that he had been taking calls constantly to an Army Captain. It revealed that Chinthaka has had a huge business with the Army Captain.
When the Army Captain was taken in for questioning his version was a completely different story. He quipped that he had nothing do with Chinthaka and denied having had constant telephone calls. This aroused suspicion among the Police investigators. He spoke as if he did not know Chinthaka. For Police investigations the contradicting statements became very vital.
The Police were able to obtain all recorded cell phone conversations with the help of the Sri Lanka Telecom Regulatory Commission who are able to submit the pre recorded telephone conversations. (The conversations could be obtained for a period of six months). These conversations proved the entire story, how it was planned and executed with the aid of two Army soldiers deployed by the Army Captain. The Police were able to reveal everything by listening to the recorded telephone conversations Chinthaka had with the Army Captain and the latter has had with the two soldiers. This was another instance where the Cell phone conversations helped to reveal the details of the murder.
