On the day the results of the local exam for those qualified as doctors in foreign countries were released,
The Registrar of the Sri Lanka Medical Council assaulted.
Dr N.Nonis had been assaulted last evening around 7 p.m near his residence in Moratuwa when he was returning home in his vehicle. It is reported that a motor cyclist had blocked his path and wanted to speak to him. On that pretext he had assaulted Dr Nonis, with a wooden pole and had had fled. It is reported that all members of the GMOA have called for an immediate investigation and until then all Doctors, Specialist Doctors and Dental Surgeons have gone on strike.
It is suspected that the nearest reason for this assault would have been after the release of the “ACTI 16” results that were released yesterday. All those who graduate as Doctors from foreign Universities have to compulsorily pass this “ACTI 16” examination conducted by the SLMC, to be eligible to register as doctors in GMOA of Sri Lanka. It is learnt that 84 % of the Medical students graduated had failed this exam and only 16% have passed the exam.
All parents of students naturally are very keen that their children become doctors and many are against sitting this exam and are well aware that Dr Nonis is very strict in regards to standards of students who have obtained Medical degrees from overseas Universities. Dr Nonis had extensively spoken about the standards of Lecturers in private Medical Colleges and had been at the helm of protests when private Medical Colleges are established, to their poor quality and sub standards.
