KATUNAYAKE DEMONSTRATION HAS MADE THE PRIVATE PENSION SCHEME TO SUSPEND
The Government had decided to suspend the proposed pension scheme for private employees temporarily until the subject is discussed extensively between the related parties. This decision had been taken yesterday at 9 p.m. at a discussion of the Central Committee of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party chaired by the President.
THE VIEWS OF THE 8 P.M. NEWS OF RUPAVAHINI ON THE KATUNAYAKE DEMONSTRATIONS:
During the 8 p.m. news bulletin of the Rupavahini it was reported that despite this proposed pension scheme had been withdrawn from the employees of the Katunayake FTZ,the employees had unnecessarily attacked the Police, with stones and other objects and had created havoc. Minister Gamini Lokuge’s view was that this was a terrorist act.
TODAY HAS BEEN DECLARED A HOLIDAY-40 HOSPITALISED
Subsequent to the demonstrations and attacks from both sides 40 have been hospitalised.25 of them were employees of the FTZ ,Katunayake, while the other 15 were Police personnel. The Inspector General of Police has advised to conduct a CID investigation about this incident.
POLICE USE TEAR GAS, GUN FIRING, WASP ATTACKS AGAINST THE STRONG DEMONSTRATORS
The workers in the FTZ,Katunayake protested strongly for the second time against the proposed scheme for a new EPF,ETF,PENSION and GRATIUTY scheme. About 20,000 workers made strong demonstrations to unprecedented heights, which the Police could not bring under control. The only alternative to curb the demonstrations was to use tear gas, firing of bullets and attacks from Wasps. This went out of hand for the Police to handle and as result there were a severe inconvenience for public transport when the roads were blocked. They even released wasp nests to sting the demonstrators with a view to disperse them.
MINISTER LOKUGE TAKES THE STAND OF BOTH SIDES
The Minister of Labour Gamini Lokuge by addressing the media had added that the workers in the FTZ Zone Katunayake would not be included into the proposed scheme. At a previous meeting Minister Lokuge had been helpless and had run away. The video below in this connection is shown below:
