Car prices set to rise after duty hike

The customs duty charges of VIVA brand cars have been increased by Rs 1 ½ lakhs.The duty charges for Alto and Maruti vehicles too have been increased. All petrol vehicles less than 1000 CC in capacity the duty have been increased between 96% to 120%.Vehicles imported having engine capacities between 1000 CC to 1600 CC, the duty has been increased between 119% to128%.Vehicles with capacities less than 2000 CC customs duty has been increased by 2 ½ lakhs.
Last year about 1800 vehicles of Viva brand vehicles were imported. This was because the duty was alarmingly reduced. The duty has now been increased by about 13 lakhs.The cost after duty hike costs Viva vehicles to be between Rs 34 lakhs to Rs 47 lakhs. Before the duty hike the cost of an Alto was in the range of Rs 12 to Rs 14 lakhs.The was revealed by a high official attached to the Sri Lankan customs.
