British national Russell Brand, a 51-year-old comedian and presenter who gained immense popularity worldwide, has been found guilty by London's Southwark Crown Court on one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault. With this verdict delivered on November 5, 2026, his professional and personal life has been plunged into a severe crisis.
Following a trial that lasted between three and four weeks, a jury of eight men and four women announced the verdict after approximately eight and a half hours of deliberation. Accordingly, he has been found guilty of crimes committed against four women between 2004 and 2009. After the verdict was announced, Judge Justice Benathan stated that Brand would face a lengthy prison sentence. The judge, pointing out the risk of Brand fleeing the country due to his wealth and resources, refused bail and ordered him to be remanded in custody. It is reported that he closed his eyes when he was found guilty of the rape charge, but otherwise showed little emotional expression.
Born in Essex on June 4, 1975, Russell Brand gained massive popularity in the early 2000s as a stand-up comedian, MTV presenter, and Hollywood actor. In recent years, he has also lived in Florida, presenting himself as a creator of spiritual and political content. This legal process against him began in 2023 following investigative revelations by The Sunday Times, The Times, and Channel 4 Dispatches.
Lead prosecutor Riel Carmi-Jones, appearing for the prosecution, described him as a ruthless and predatory individual who used his popularity and power to engage in sexual relations without women's consent. A friend of his testified in court that he had an objective to sleep with thousands of women and had introduced rules himself, such as only saying what women wanted to hear.
There are four incidents for which the jury found him guilty. The first is the rape of a 21-year-old fan he met after a show at Hammersmith Apollo in 2009. Although they initially engaged in consensual sex, he later removed the condom and forcibly engaged in anal sex, and she testified that he treated her like an animal. The second incident proven was a sexual assault in 2004 at a party in a Soho bar, where he squeezed a woman's breasts within about a minute of meeting her. Thirdly, he was also found guilty of assaulting a radio presenter in 2004 or 2005. In this incident, he pushed her against a wall in front of his entourage, aggressively kissed and touched her, which she described as a violent assault. The fourth incident is a sexual assault during a project in 2009, where he forced a woman to massage him and held his head in her groin area, making her feel his breath.
However, he was acquitted of two other rape charges and one charge of attempted serious sexual assault. These included a rape charge in a Bournemouth hotel in 1999 and an attempt to drag a female employee into a toilet in 2001. Although Brand admitted to using his fame for sexual encounters, he strongly stated in court that he never engaged in such acts without women's consent. His current wife, Laura Brand, also testified on his behalf, saying that he is now a completely changed husband and father.
He is scheduled to be sentenced on Monday, November 9, 2026. Under British law, the maximum penalty for sexual assault is 10 years, while for rape, it is significantly higher. The Crown Prosecution Service emphasized that this verdict confirms that the fundamental issue of consent does not change based on fame or status.
Meanwhile, the Metropolitan Police are further investigating two more rape allegations against Brand. One of these charges comes from a 16-year-old schoolgirl who had a relationship with Brand when he was 30 years old. Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy, who called Brand a predator, urged the public to come forward if there are any other victims.
