The life journey of the famous filmmaker Sanjay Gupta, a giant in Bollywood's underworld and action films, ended not like a scene from a movie, but due to an unfortunate accident at his home.
This great director and producer, who created highly successful films like Kaante, Shootout at Wadala, Kaabil, Zinda, and Shootout at Lokhandwala, was 59 years old at the time of his death. The tragedy occurred at his home in Mumbai's Versova area around 2:00 AM on October 31, 2026, after midnight on October 30.
As confirmed by Versova police and numerous media reports, this death was due to an accidental fall. According to CCTV footage installed at his home, he lost his balance and fell while walking from his living room towards the kitchen. His head hit hard against a ledge (or, according to some reports, a kitchen counter) on the wall separating the kitchen and the living room. Police stated that a pet dog was also seen in the footage at the time of the accident.
Due to severe head injuries, there was excessive bleeding, and he was found lying in a pool of blood or in a semi-sitting position. At this unfortunate moment, his wife, son, daughter, and a domestic worker were in deep sleep in their bedrooms and did not hear the sound of the fall. After he was found the next morning, he was rushed to Cooper Hospital, but it was confirmed that he had already passed away.
As no complaint was lodged by family members and there were no suspicious circumstances, Versova police recorded this as an accidental death. A forensic team inspected the house, and the body was sent for post-mortem examination. Milap Zaveri and Ashok Pandit, who are close friends and filmmakers, also confirmed to the media that Gupta died from a fall and head injury.
Sanjay Gupta's personal life was also filled with many ups and downs. He married Anuradha Lekhi Gupta in 1997 but divorced her in 2003 due to underworld connections and personal issues. However, he stated that he never gave up his love for her, and in 2009, they remarried at a temple in Khar. Anuradha, a creative artist who won the International Mrs. World crown in 2024, and Gupta have two young children named Shivansh and Dalai. Having survived a serious car accident in the past, this time he unfortunately passed away at his own home.
He entered direction in 1994 with the film Aatish, starring Sanjay Dutt, and through White Feather Films, he contributed numerous creations to Bollywood, including Ram Shastra, Hameshaa, Jung, Khauff, Musafir, Jazbaa, Mumbai Saga, and The Miranda Brothers. Films like Plan and Acid Factory were also his productions. John Abraham and Sanjay Dutt were frequently seen in his films, and although some of his creations, influenced by Hollywood and Korean cinema, were accused of plagiarism, he fearlessly defended his creative style.
On the evening of October 31, his body was brought in a flower-decorated ambulance to Pawan Hans Crematorium, where the final rites were performed. His young son Shivansh and daughter Dalai lit the pyre. Numerous Bollywood stars, including Abhishek Bachchan, Manoj Bajpayee, Rakesh Roshan, Rajpal Yadav, Rajat Bedi, Ronit Roy, Rohit Roy, Fardeen Khan, and Gulshan Grover, attended the ceremony.
His passing has deeply shocked Bollywood. Hrithik Roshan, the lead actor in the film Kaabil, posted an emotional note recalling Gupta's smile and dedication, stating, 'One film with you was not enough.' Many other stars, including Hansal Mehta, Kangana Ranaut, and Kajol, also expressed their shock.
Sanjay Dutt, who was a close associate of Gupta both in cinema and real life, has pledged to somehow create the film Kaante 2, which they recently discussed, as his brother's dream. Although Sanjay Gupta, who had an extremely successful cinematic journey, quietly passed away in his home, his cinematic mark will remain indelible in Bollywood history.
