Taking a decision that directly impacts daily life, wheat flour importing companies have taken steps to increase the price of a kilogram of wheat flour in the local market by 13 rupees. This new price revision has been enforced effective immediately from midnight on the 20th.
With this sudden decision taken by the importers, wheat flour prices in wholesale and retail markets across the island will increase accordingly.
Based on fluctuations in global wheat prices, as well as rising transportation and operational costs, major wheat flour companies and importers in the country have previously made similar price revisions on several occasions.
The repeated increase in wheat flour prices will directly impact consumers' daily meals. Accordingly, there is a high risk that this will directly affect the prices of bakery products, including bread, as well as flour-based short eats like kottu and roti, which are widely consumed by the public.
The All Ceylon Bakery Owners' Association and other relevant parties, having noted the situation faced by their industry due to the increase in flour prices, are scheduled to discuss the matter in the future. It is reported that a final decision regarding future price revisions for bakery products, including bread, and the next steps to be taken will be made after these discussions.
