Two defendants, who have been accused in connection with the illegal storage of explosives and firearms in the Wanathawilluwa area of Puttalam by Zahran Hashim and others linked to the Easter Sunday terrorist attacks, have informed the court that they are ready to plead guilty. When the case was called before the Negombo Three-Judge High Court panel, defendants Abu Haneefa Mohamed Mufeed and Ameer Hamza Mohamed Hamas expressed their agreement to plead guilty to all charges against them.
This case is being heard before a three-judge panel comprising High Court Judges Lal Bandara (Chairman), Rashmi Singappuli, and Nayomi Wickremasekara. In addition to the two who are ready to plead guilty, four defendants who were sentenced to over 200 years of rigorous imprisonment in the main Easter attack case have also been named as other defendants in this case. These four defendants are Mohamed Saarik Adam Lebbe, Mohamed Ibrahim Saadiq Abdullah, Mohamed Ibrahim Mohamed Naufar, and Mohamed Ramees Mohamed Sajid, who were produced in court by prison officials. Furthermore, the other two defendants, who were released on bail, also appeared in court.
The Attorney General has filed 14 indictments against them for illegally possessing explosives including nitrates, gelignite sticks, firearms, as well as nitric acid and urea used to make explosives, at the Wanathawilluwa Lactose Estate in or around 2018. After considering the facts, the three-judge panel decided to hear this case daily starting from the 5th of next month. Accordingly, the judges ordered the defendants to inform the court of their stance regarding the relevant charges on that day, and the case is scheduled to be called again next Monday (the 5th).
