With the sudden island-wide power outage, the operation of the Norochcholai Lakvijaya Coal Power Plant, the country's main power generation center, has completely ceased. The plant management confirms that all three of its power generation units are currently completely inactive.
Consequently, the entire capacity supplied by the Norochcholai power plant has been lost to the national power grid at this moment.According to authorities, the sudden shutdown of this massive power plant is due to an automatically activated safety measure. The generators were halted as a protective measure for the plant due to a sudden technical fault in the national system, which caused its frequency to drop instantly. However, the result of this is the complete loss of the primary energy source, which supplies over 40 percent of the country's daily electricity requirement, from the national system.
Power engineers point out that this is not a situation that can be immediately restored. Unlike hydropower or diesel power plants, there is no technical capability to restart a coal power plant immediately after a breakdown. A specific technical process must be followed for this. At this moment, the boilers and steam turbines, which are at high temperatures, must be allowed to cool completely, and then it will take at least 48 to 72 hours to rebuild pressure and synchronize with the national system.
This is not the first time the Lakvijaya power plant, which consists of three 300-megawatt generators, has been rendered inactive in this manner. Previously, whenever island-wide power outages were reported, this plant also became inactive, and managing the massive 900-megawatt power deficit created until these generators were restarted and reconnected to the system was a significant challenge for the authorities. The current situation makes it clear that the same challenging situation will have to be faced this time as well.
