On the surface, it was an ordinary rented house. However, within that house, rented for Rs. 35,000 monthly, located in the Halpita area of Polgasowita, a large-scale heroin trafficking operation worth nearly Rs. 5.6 million was being carried out.
Yesterday (15), Kesbewa Police raided this house and arrested six individuals, including two women belonging to an organized crime gang, revealing a dark network of suspects connected to numerous crimes across the island.Police confirm that a married couple is among those arrested. During the raid, 112 grams of heroin, an electronic scale, mobile phones used for trafficking, and a stock of small papers with a 'Red Indian' logo used for packaging drugs were taken into police custody from their possession.
The main suspect in this operation rented this house with a woman about a year ago and, together with other members, has been secretly carrying out the trafficking. He is a member of a criminal gang who was imprisoned on a drug charge and released on bail by the High Court a month ago. His criminal history is even more dangerous. Police reveal that he is also the suspect who, a few months ago, broke into a house in Boralesgamuwa, severely injured a woman with a sharp weapon, attempted to assault police officers with a sharp weapon at the time, and then fled on a motorcycle.
Interrogations of the main suspect revealed that this drug consignment belongs to 'Bodhiyawatte Avishka,' an organized criminal and drug trafficker. Their duty was to package the drugs and place them in various locations according to his instructions. It was further revealed that Avishka, the criminal gang member, paid the main suspect a monthly salary of one hundred thousand rupees (one lakh). Additionally, another criminal gang member arrested here has 26 court cases pending against him for theft, robbery, and drug charges in several areas, including Udawalawe. The other male and female members of the criminal gang also face various charges, including drug-related offenses.
This raid was carried out based on confidential information received by the Officer-in-Charge of Kesbewa Police, Chief Police Inspector K.P. Kalansooriya. The arrested male and female suspects are scheduled to be produced before the Kesbewa Magistrate's Court to obtain detention orders.
