The Sri Lanka Police has confirmed that the news circulating that the police had recorded a statement from a young man regarding a 'Was Kaviya' (a type of curse poem) that was widely discussed on social media in recent days is completely false. A special investigation has now been launched by order of the Inspector General of Police regarding the dissemination of this false statement by a person wearing a lawyer's robe.
This incident came to light with a statement made on social media by lawyer Sudath Wickramarathne, claiming that Dematagoda Police had summoned his client and recorded a statement regarding a 'Was Kaviya' on or around October 22, 2026.
However, immediate steps were taken by the Dematagoda Police Station to call for a report regarding this controversial video and statement. The Officer-in-Charge of Dematagoda Police stated that upon examining the official records of the police station and inquiring from officers on duty that day, it was confirmed that no such statement had been recorded from any individual. Accordingly, it has been officially reported that no complaint regarding a 'Was Kaviya' has been received by the Dematagoda Police.
Lawyer Sudath Wickramarathne, who is accused of presenting false information to the media in this manner, serves as the General Secretary of the Samagi Lawyers' Federation. Additionally, it is reported that he is an active political member of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya, focusing on the Colombo District. He has been a much-discussed figure in the media through several recent incidents.
With the confirmation that the lawyer's statement is false, legal action against him has been initiated under the direct orders of the Inspector General of Police. Accordingly, a comprehensive investigation has already been launched by the Central Criminal Investigation Department regarding the misleading of the public by making a false statement on social media.
