A constable attached to the Kattankudy Police has been suspended from duty in connection with an incident where he allegedly went to the house of a person said to be a moonshine trafficker and involved in various crimes, and held a liquor party. This officer's duties have been suspended effective from the 1st of last month, following a disciplinary inquiry conducted by the Batticaloa Assistant Superintendent of Police (1).
Police say that this constable, along with two others believed to be his friends, went to the house of the said trafficker, who resides in the Kattankudy area, on the 29th of last month. There, they went to the lagoon area behind the house and all four of them together consumed alcohol and held a party.
During the party, an altercation broke out between one of the two individuals who came with the constable and the person allegedly involved in the said crimes. Police sources reveal that four teeth of the alleged trafficker were broken due to an assault that occurred there. At that time, the person whose teeth were broken hit the other person with a stick, causing injuries to the latter's head, and both of them have been hospitalized for treatment.
A senior police officer in Batticaloa has stated that several cases are pending in court against the person whose teeth were broken in this altercation, under charges such as moonshine trafficking, attempting to commit murder by shooting with a firearm, and assaulting and injuring a person. The police further state that additional investigations are underway against the suspended constable for knowingly maintaining close ties with a person with such a criminal background and participating in a liquor party with him.
