Today, the Maligakanda Magistrate's Court decided to reject the anticipatory bail application filed by Mrs. Shiranthi Rajapaksa, requesting to prevent her arrest at the airport upon her return from abroad. As this bail application, which was filed retrospectively, was considered after Mrs. Shiranthi Rajapaksa had already been arrested, its rejection at this point means there will be no change in Mrs. Shiranthi Rajapaksa's detention order, under which she is remanded until tomorrow (13).
This bail application was called today (12) morning before Maligakanda Magistrate Janitha Roshani Perera. There, the Director of the Financial Crimes Investigation Division (FCID), who was named as the respondent in the bail application, appeared before the court and presented his arguments. After carefully considering those submissions, the Magistrate issued this order rejecting the relevant bail application. The previous court proceedings regarding this anticipatory bail application took place on the 5th.
On that day, President's Counsel Anil Silva, appearing for Mrs. Shiranthi Rajapaksa, presented facts to the court regarding her medical conditions. However, she was not arrested at the airport but was arrested on the 7th. Although Mrs. Shiranthi Rajapaksa's bail expectation is thus rejected, her lawyers have the opportunity to request bail again tomorrow, the 13th, in the case related to the Siriliya financial fraud, which will be re-examined.
During her detention, her attempt to go to a private hospital for treatment for an eye condition was rejected according to prison rules, and she received treatment from the eye ward and returned to Welikada. At this time, Shiranthi's eldest son, Namal Rajapaksa, is remanded due to the Krish deal, and her husband, Mahinda Rajapaksa, is receiving treatment at Nawaloka Hospital due to a sudden medical condition.
