A red warrant in English has been issued by the court for the arrest of a tuition teacher, currently residing abroad, who is suspected of possessing property worth approximately seven crore rupees, allegedly earned illegally by Shirani Basik, known as a large-scale drug trafficker, and his father.
After considering the facts presented to the court by the Colombo Central Criminal Investigation Bureau, Colombo Additional Magistrate Mr. Lahiru Silva issued this order yesterday (22). The red warrant was issued against a tuition teacher named Sampath Attanayake, and since the suspect has already fled the country, the police had requested the court to take necessary steps to arrest him and produce him before the court.
The police revealed to the court that properties worth approximately seven crore rupees, including a valuable building complex in the Borella area, three plots of land in the Dambulla area, and a well-known hotel also located in Dambulla, have been registered in the name of this teacher. Furthermore, investigations have revealed that Shirani Basik's father, Abdul Razak Mohamed Basik, who holds a directorship in a company, has also purchased a house in a housing complex in the Gampaha area, worth approximately three crore rupees, under his own name.
Further investigations are currently underway regarding the transfer of money, allegedly earned from drug trafficking, to the bank accounts of the suspects. Meanwhile, Abdul Razak Mohamed Basik, who is currently remanded in connection with this incident, was produced before the court yesterday via WhatsApp technology.
There, President's Counsel Nalinda Indratissa, appearing for the suspect, requested the court to grant bail to his client, stating that he has been imprisoned for nearly two months and is an elderly person who cannot obstruct investigations. Considering the facts presented, the Magistrate ordered the suspect to be released on strict bail conditions.
Accordingly, the Magistrate ordered a cash bail of one lakh rupees and three personal sureties of fifty lakh rupees each, and also ordered the submission of an affidavit stating that a bail of fifty lakh rupees can be deposited in court, as well as Grama Seva certificates to confirm residency. A travel ban was also imposed on the suspect, and he was ordered to be released only after fulfilling all these conditions. The police were further ordered to present the progress of the investigation related to the incident to the court on December 03.
