President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has highly appreciated the decision taken by the Saudi Supreme Court to overturn the death sentence imposed on Anojan Sivarasa, a Sri Lankan who had gone abroad in search of a better life and was facing the death penalty in Saudi Arabia. The President points out that this decision is a great relief and comfort to Anojan, his family members, and all Sri Lankans who were keenly interested in this matter.
The President, in a post on his 'X' account, stated that patient diplomatic interventions, carried out with respect for the legal process of a friendly state, directly led to this positive outcome. He also appreciated the persistent efforts of all parties who continuously advocated for the Sri Lankan living abroad. The President extended special thanks to the Saudi Arabian government for its support in this decision and conveyed the Sri Lankan government's commendation to the diplomats, government officials, and legal teams from both countries who worked diligently on this legal process.
The President emphasized that even though the death penalty has been removed, the government is prepared to continue providing all necessary support to Anojan and his family until the remaining legal procedures against him are completed. The President further elaborated on his statement by saying that no Sri Lankan going abroad in search of a better livelihood should ever feel abandoned.
