Former First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa, who is currently in remand custody, was taken to the Colombo National Eye Hospital this morning (09) due to an eye condition. After examination, she was taken back to the women's section of Welikada Prison. It was reported that she was brought to the hospital around 10:30 AM under special security by prison officials.
Yesterday (08), she was referred to a prison specialist doctor, and based on the medical recommendation received, steps have been taken to present her to a specialist doctor at the National Eye Hospital this morning.Although it was reported that she was scheduled to be taken to a private hospital in Colombo, Nawaloka, yesterday, the prison specialist doctor recommended that she be presented to the National Eye Hospital today.
Several media outlets had reported that the Additional Magistrate of Colombo had ordered her to be referred to Nawaloka Hospital to be presented to the doctor who treated her previously. However, the prison stated that no such order had been received by them.
According to reports, the Magistrate's Court had only informed the prison of a request made by the lawyer. However, it is prison law to obtain all medical reports from a government hospital accountable to the court, through government-recognized doctors. Allowing reports to be obtained outside of this process increases the likelihood of false reports being submitted, providing special advantages to the prisoner.
Meanwhile, an opinion is being discussed on social media that Shiranthi's eye condition is fake. An idea has emerged in that discussion that the sudden appearance of a plaster on her eye on the day of her arrest, which was not present in videos circulated when she arrived in Sri Lanka via Malaysia after visiting Singapore, was a tactic used by her to obtain bail or to stay in a hospital bed. There are also criticisms that the cross-plaster applied by someone at home was not done with the knowledge of a doctor.
Mrs. Shiranthi Rajapaksa has been ordered to be remanded until the upcoming 13th.
Below are some social media criticisms.
